With reference to your letter of 29th January last,
I am directed to inform you that in view of your assurance
that the finance of the proposed Trade Fair can be satisfac-
torily arranged the Government approves the promotion by you
of a British Empire and China Trade Fair on the lines indicated
in the memorandum which accompanied your letter under reply.
Your project has the entire sympathy of the Government
which is prepared to give it practical support to the extent of
the grant of a valuable site free of rent and a contribution
of $2,000 towards the expenses.
It is to be understood that no further claim on the
Government for financial assistanc can be entertained.
Telegrams will be sent to the Ministry of Commerce,
Canberra, and to the Ministry of Trade and Industry at
Wellington, New Zealand, informing them of the proposed Fair
and asking for their support.
I am to request that you will furnish this Government
with a monthly report on the progress of the scheme, including
a full statement of the financial position.
I am further to state that it is not considered
possible to avoid a public announcement in Hong Kong regarding
the proposed Fair. It is felt that full publicity locally
